Why I started it

While working as a capital planning consultant at Gordian, I worked with organizations that plan the upkeep and replacement of their facilities as long-term assets. I realized the same approach could serve homeowners, who face the same decisions with far less guidance. I also knew I would be returning to Oklahoma City for my MBA, so I formed BoomTown Home Services here as an LLC in July 2024. The first customers came that summer.

What BoomTown does

BoomTown organizes its work into four service areas: appliance care, lawn and exterior, seasonal prep, and home planning. The work covers residential home maintenance and preventive care, from routine visits to seasonal upkeep and one-off jobs. Seasonal prep, which gets a home ready for summer heat and winter freezes, is the service customers request most and the most profitable one. Pest spraying is not part of the service line; I dropped it because carrying the chemicals requires permits.

Home planning is the service closest to my consulting background. I take stock of what is installed in a home, when it was installed, how long it should last, and what replacing it would cost, and then do the math that turns that inventory into a plan for repairs, replacements, and budgeting. I have delivered one so far, and it drew directly on the facility assessment work I did at Gordian.

Running the business

I run day-to-day operations myself: the services offered, scheduling and delivery, customer communication, invoicing, and marketing. Google Maps, Gmail, and Google Sheets carry the scheduling and coordination. I built the website myself, which went live in February 2025, and commissioned a local artist to design the logo. Customers find BoomTown through its Google listing and through canvassing neighborhoods, and over the course of a year it serves roughly 50 or more households.

BoomTown began as a nights-and-weekends project alongside my work at Gordian and, later, my MBA. It has been a passion project rather than my primary income, which lets me be selective about the jobs I accept. It stays active year-round, and for now my plan is to hold it steady.

What it has taught me

BoomTown and my MBA have fed each other. I have leaned on what I learned in the classroom, especially in process design and strategy, to decide which services to offer and how to deliver them repeatably, and the experience of owning every part of a small P&L shapes how I approach coursework. It also keeps me close to the daily realities of the homeowners and small operators I hope to advise as a consultant. What I am proudest of is simple: helping maintain the homes of Oklahoma City.
